I dated my wife, Tina for 4 years while attending college at Western Illinois University, and we were married in 1979. I have 2 kids: Lindsey, who has two children Liam, 9, and Ruby, 7, and who are moving back to Wyoming, and Cody, his wife Maddie and their daughter Lilly Wren, 8, living in South Austin, Texas.
How did you come to know Christ: I grew up churched. We had been married for a few years, I was teaching and coaching and had two children. But I was struggling with the issues of meaning and purpose and death. Tina, who was not a follower of Christ yet, noticed a book advertised on TV called The Power for Living in 1983, the year of the Bible, and ordered it for me, because my childhood hero Roger Staubach was featured. It was the Gospel. I got up one night and read the book and got on my knees and accept Christ as my Savior and Lord. I got up the next day, told Tina something happened to me over night, that I had become a Christian and I headed to school with the little white baptismal Bible. I told a coaching friend/teacher and he said, “Great we can start an FCA”. The next week I was helping lead and FCA Huddle!
Most influential Coach:
Don Hamilton, my Dad.
Why do you work for FCA?
I desire to play a role in transforming the lives of coaches and athletes and in turn, the culture of sports; a culture where they can experience the love of Christ and grow in Godly character impacting their teams, campuses and communities through the presence of Christ in sport.
Favorite Bible verse:
Romans 12:2-3 (ESV) Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Favorite Sports team:
For the most part I really only follow coaches and athletes. I follow teams that have coaches and athletes that are committed Christ followers. I grew up a passionate Dallas Cowboy fan but after Tom Landry’s firing I could not ever support them again. So now I mainly follow players and coaches, with one exception, I am a diehard St. Louis Cardinal fan.
Favorite athlete/sports figure:
My dad. He was he the best HS football player in the state of IL at a little school of only 150 kids. He was the leading scoring and rusher in the state and had a 27 game winning streak in the 40’s which was the longest in the country at the time. Roger Staubach of course and Tom Landry. I have had the opportunity to meet them both and Coach Landry had a huge impact on the growth of Wyoming FCA.
My family, writing and speaking on spiritual transformation. My first book will be published summer of 2016
